UX and Artificial Intelligence in telehealth: simplifying access to healthcare services

In recent years, following the Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve witnessed rapid evolution and massive spread of healthcare technology in almost every aspect of our daily lives. In the healthcare sector, this has meant further development of the promising field of remote medical assistance, thanks to a patient-centered approach and the use of new technologies. Specifically, we are talking about user experience (UX) design and AI in healthcare applied to telemedicine.

This article will explore the benefits of applying a human-centered approach to patient experience and the opportunities AI offers for optimizing interaction with interfaces and personalizing remote care services.

Telehealth: the healthcare of the future

Telehealth or ehealth allows patients to access medical services remotely through digital technologies, overcoming physical barriers and geographic boundaries. It makes it possible to provide high-quality care in an accessible, economical, and efficient manner, positively impacting the reduction of morbidity and mortality.

Throughout the 20th century, virtual care experienced exponential growth driven by technological advancements like the telephone, radio, and more recently, the internet and artificial intelligence.

Currently, as in many other countries, Italy has adopted a specific strategy for the spread of telemedicine and digital health in general. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) published a report on the integration of digital health into the healthcare systems of WHO European Region countries. Data on Italy shows that a national system of electronic health records (EHR) has been implemented, accessible by 57% of Italian healthcare institutions.

Additionally, a national patient portal has been created through which citizens can book medical appointments, and view medical records, prescriptions, and treatment plans. Telemedicine is constantly evolving, with various programs and services for teleconsultation, remote patient monitoring, and surveillance implemented via mHealth (mobile health) applications.

Telemedicine not only improves access to care but also optimizes time management for doctors and patients, making healthcare services more efficient and accessible. Thanks to the growing adoption of connected devices and digital platforms, patients can receive diagnoses, consultations, and continuous monitoring comfortably from their homes. In this context, an intuitive user interface and the integration of intelligent technologies are crucial to ensure smooth experiences and reduce access barriers.

Importance of UX in telehealth

In designing telemedicine services, user experience (UX) plays a fundamental role in the successful adoption of new digital tools by patients and healthcare staff. UX and UI design enable the creation of intuitive interfaces that meet user needs, generating a perception of effectiveness and trust in the service.

Accessible telemedicine platforms with a user-friendly interface

An effective telemedicine platform must be usable without difficulty even by people with little familiarity with technology or limited medical knowledge.

An intuitive and user-friendly interface minimizes the learning curve and facilitates interaction with the service and between patients and doctors, improving communication efficiency.

For example, a clear and easy-to-use prescription management platform can help patients correctly take prescribed medications, enhancing therapeutic adherence and treatment outcomes.

User-centered approach for design that meets user needs

User-centered design (UCD) places the needs of patients and doctors at the heart of the development process. Involving end users from the early stages through interviews, usability tests, and focus groups allows for the collection of valuable feedback that guides UX designers in the iterative improvement of the user interface.

This approach creates solutions that effectively meet user needs, improving the overall effectiveness and satisfaction with the telemedicine service. UCD is also crucial in designing medical devices and health monitoring tools. A user-centered design facilitates interaction with such devices and helps the patient follow the prescribed treatment. Especially in the case of chronic diseases, the user can become more autonomous in making decisions about medication thanks to the support of digital applications that provide real-time information about their condition.

Usability across multiple devices for always accessible telemedicine services

Today, the ability to access digital services or use applications through any device is increasingly taken for granted. Additionally, telemedicine platforms have a broad target audience that needs to access websites and apps via computers, tablets, smartphones, or wearables.

Each device has unique characteristics in terms of screen size, interaction modes, and usage context. UX and UI designers can design interfaces that are usable on every device to ensure consistent and satisfying user experiences regardless of the device used.

Artificial Intelligence and telemedicine for a better User Experience

Artificial intelligence (AI) offers new and exciting prospects in telemedicine, contributing to improved user experience and making digital health services more efficient and personalized. Here are some examples of AI applications in telemedicine:

Virtual Assistants and Chatbots – These AI-based tools support patients 24/7 without the need for human assistance. Virtual assistants and chatbots can answer frequently asked questions, guide users in booking appointments, provide therapy reminders, and offer basic health information. This reduces the workload for medical staff and improves the accessibility and efficiency of healthcare resources.

Personalization of the User Experience – AI can analyze demographic, behavioral, and clinical data of each user to adapt the interface and content based on their needs. For example, AI can adjust font size or contrast to suit the user’s different visual abilities. This personalization makes telehealth platforms more intuitive, user-friendly, and accessible.

Recommendation Algorithms – Within the realm of health informatics, these AI algorithms suggest relevant content and services based on user preferences and behaviors. For instance, a patient who has consulted information on a specific condition might receive recommendations on related articles, informative videos, or appointments with specialist doctors. Additionally, recommendation algorithms can early identify potential health issues, enabling proactive and timely interventions.

Integrating AI into telemedicine offers several opportunities to optimize user experience. Virtual assistants, chatbots, and recommendation algorithms enhance the accessibility, efficiency, and personalization of healthcare services, making telemedicine more effective in meeting each user’s needs.

Case study: UX design for a B2C telemedicine App

At Conflux, we specialize in healthcare design to create care pathways that put people at the center. For one of our clients, we conducted a research project for a business-to-customer telemedicine application.

Through an analysis of all the telemedicine apps developed or in development by the client, our team of UX research and design experts identified a series of essential features. Identifying and prioritizing the different features allowed the creation of a user journey, that is, the typical path the user should take within the app.

Finally, a detailed action plan and a service design plan were developed, with a comprehensive analysis of the user experience in using the service, which will support the actual design phase, making it more precise and targeted.

Conclusions

Telemedicine provides broader and more sustainable access to care. For its services to be successful, user-centered design is essential. By involving patients and healthcare staff in the process, UX specialists can create solutions that effectively meet user needs. A user-friendly, intuitive interface adaptable to various devices facilitates interaction with the service and enhances the perception of a reliable and efficient service.

Integrating artificial intelligence into telemedicine services further enhances the user experience: chatbots and virtual assistants support patients around the clock, while AI-based personalization and targeted recommendations improve service effectiveness and satisfaction.

Investing in UX design and AI is key to a more innovative, efficient, and patient-centered future of telemedicine, contributing to a more responsive and personalized healthcare system.
